In the framework of Merimna’s policy of continuing professional education and training, Maria Stefa, a nurse of our Pediatric Palliative Home Care Service, attended the Training of Trainers for Health Professionals in Palliative Care, organized by the American-Austrian organization Open Medical Institute (OMI), in collaboration with the American End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC). The training took place from 27 August to 2 September in Salzburg, Austria.
The training program included topics such as management of pain and other symptoms, ethical issues in caring for seriously ill patients, cultural issues, communication, bereavement, and self-care for healthcare professionals. Finally, there were separate sections for pediatric patients, as well as many interesting interactive workshops.
The training was conducted by the internationally recognized health care professionals and academics in the field of Palliative Care Betty Ferrell, Professor and Director of Nursing Research and Education and Principal Investigator at City of Hope-Cancer Treatment and Research Center, Carrie L.
